Professor Murdered in Westlake Village

March 23, 2010

Westlake Village saw its first homicide in several years when a man died after being shot following a fight at a party in the community Saturday night.

Norman Schureman, a 51-year-old teacher from Altadena, was attending a Persian New Year’s party at a residence on Kentfield Court when Steve Homna, 46, allegedly left the residence and then returned with a handgun in his possession, fatally shooting Schureman in the torso. Other attendees at the party detained the suspect until authorities could take him into custody.

Witnesses said Homna’s wife reported that someone allegedly used a religious expletive toward her during the party. Homna, who lives next door to the party’s host, returned to the party after his wife’s admission and allegedly flashed a knife he’d brought back with him. During a struggle with partygoers who were trying to subdue Homna, he pulled the gun and struck Schureman.

Schureman was a design professor at and alumnus of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
